This year the Annual meeting of the G8 members will focus on "Growth and responsibility": Shaping globalization and helping Africa to develop will be key focuses of the meeting in Heiligendamm.
The G8 summit in Germany starts with the Motto: "Global growth and employment" and with a focus on the situation in Africa and on the fight against HIV/AIDS, the social dimension of globalization will also be on the agenda.
The main fields of action that will be approached during the meeting are three: • Strategies for more and better employment in industrialised countries • Broadening and strengthening social protection in developing countries and emerging economies • Corporate social responsibility
With regards to this last point private businesses that operate at an international level also have a responsibility to help achieve a more socially just world. It is of course primarily the task of governments to ensure that human rights are respected and that labour standards are complied with, but companies can go beyond what is merely required by law, in the form of voluntary commitments. They can promote • Acting in line with the rule of law • Transparency • Good corporate governance • Anti-corruption • Good working relations between employers and the workforce.
